All cocoons have been bred in my own garden in UK and kept cool to keep them in top condition through the winter.
If you will decide to buy these before the hatching season you will be responsible for storying them over winter. Please store the cocoons in a cool dry place until it warms up outside. Sheds, garages, gardens are best, anywhere with outside temperature. We don’t recommend fridge as the air is not humid enough and cocoons can dry out.
Short leaflet with instructions and bullet points will be added to your parcel.
These are children and pet safe, sting-less Mason Bees also known as solitary bees. They are incredibly hard working pollinators of spring fruit trees, flowers, and berries.
Two stage quality check is completed for each cocoon when tubes are opened and just before dispatch. That guarantees each cocoon is full and healthy.
Hatches approximately 3 weeks before the red mason bee.
Adults are on wing in one generation from March to May / June. The males of Osmia cornuta often appear as early as mid-March. The main nesting activity of the females, which are already active in the morning hours at temperatures of approx. 10 °C, is between mid-March and early May, and in warmer years between early March and mid-April. Nesting activity from mid-April, with a maximum in average years at the end of April / beginning of May.
This bee type will produce cocoons in tubes, wood holes, bamboo canes or any existing cavities of various shapes – diameter must be approx 8-10 mm as this one is larger than red mason bee.
